Wheeler’s Grove, Pottawattamie, IA |
One of the original settlers of the area that eventually became Grove Township in Pottawamie, IA, he settled section 16 in 1851. The first school was held in his home for several years in the early 1850’s. In 1858, he was elected a trustee of the new Grove Township created from Macedonia. The town was named “Wheeler’s Grove” in his honor. The town was located on the Mormon Trail and was a stop for a number of Mormons who stopped for a year or two on their way west. In 1859, SMB built a mill on Jordan Creek (the year after J.S. Watson built his on Farm Creek). Hist of Grove Twp
Children by second marriage: Emma (Emily), Anna Rebecca, Frank, Lewis, Frederick.
Marriage record for his son Lafayette in 1909 lists his name as “Solomon Foster Barber Wheeler.”
A post on Ancestry in 1999 gives his birthdate as 6 Jan 1816 and says he was in Indiana, perhaps Vigo County, 1837-1843. (http://boards.ancestry.com/localities.northam.usa.states.indiana.counties.vigo/774/mb.ashx - Keith Wheeler)
