“Portage Heritage” reports he was one of the original residents of Hiram, OH, coming from Sterling in Aug 1811 with his brother in law James. At the time, there were 11 families and 58 people. He was chosen Overseer in 1826. His oldest son Luther moved on to Missouri in the 1830s, but Seth and several of his children stayed in Ohio. Hiram in the 1830s was visited by a group of Mormons on their pilgrimage west to find an accommodating settlement. Hiram was not, and at least one of Seth's sons-in-law was involved in "encouraging" them to leave. In the 1840 census, there is a young man 30-40, who is likely Seth, Jr., as he doesn't appear elsewhere in the state. There is also a young woman 15-20 and an older woman 50-60. The latter is a bit young to be Mary, and a descendant indicates she died in 1837. Seth's parents were found by looking at the 1800 Windham Co census, where Seth is next door to Hezekiah Cole. Records of Hezekiah’s daughter Ruth were found in Voluntown, listing her as the daughter of Hezekiah and Patience, and granddaughter of Hezekiah. [edit] Census
