BIOGRAPHY: Posted by: Chris Knight Date: October 31, 1999 at 20:52:45 In Reply to: Alger Cemetery Clinton Co Iowa by Russ Hanson Russ, I am related to the Knight family you mentioned buried in the (2) cemeteries - Alger and Mowder. Lyman Alger's 2nd wife, Martha Knight, is my g-g-g-grandaunt. She was first married to Lyman's brother, Serill Alger, who died in Illinois. Their only son, Delos Alger, died in the Civil War. Looking at the marriage date for Lyman and Martha, Delos would have to have been Serill's son or perhaps (?). As far as the other Knight's, William Knight (Martha's brother)married Roxanna Alger. Roxanna (Roxana) is buried next to William in Alger Cemetery. Did you happen to get a date of death on Roxanna's tombstone? Roxanna is Lyman' s sister according to the family Bible page (copy) that I have. Gorton Knight married Marsena Alger and later, Chloe . Gorton has (2) tombstones: one in Mowder Cemetery in Clinton County, Iowa next to Chloe and one at Elton Cemetery in Delevan (Freedom Twshp.), New York next to his first wife, Marcena Alger. Gorton's son, Edward G. Knight, moved to Clinton County with his wife, Mary Jane Alger, daughter of Lyman and Dorcas (Hawkins) Alger. I have not seen mention of his tombstone in the Clinton County records. This particular branch of Algers came from Serill and Polly (Jackson) Alger who moved around quite a bit. Serill (Sr.) was born in Rhode Island. The couple started in CT, then moved to Pownal, VT then to Nelson, Madison, NY then to North Boston, Erie (then Niagara?), NY. Their children moved to Freedom Township, then out to the Calam us, Clinton, IA area. The Curtis name is from Almon (Almond)Curtis who married Phila Knight (Martha's and William's sister). Almon Curtis was first married married to Elizabeth (Betsy) Sanborn. DeWitt Clinton Curtis is named after NY governor DeWitt Clinton and is from Almon Curtis' first marriage. Children from Almon's marriage to Phila Knight went further West than Iowa, most ending up in the Dakotas. Chris Knight
