Sarah is said to be the youngest of five children. Two brothers were Eli and Fellows. When she was eight, the family moved to Rochester, New York. Prior to her marriage to John William Hawkins, she was married to Francis G. Maloney. There were three children born to this marriage: Mary Frances, Fred Hampton, and Helen Weed (Nellie). With John Hawkins, she had three more children.
