Washburns were in Duxbury and Bridgewater, Mass., as early as 1632, coming from Evesham, Worcestershire, England, an ancient town situate on the river Avon, where they traced their ancestry back to 1259, in English nobility. Washburn means literally swift flowing brook or small stream.
