Joseph Carley, b. Dec. 7, 1751, at Leicester.
Drafted into the Continental Army in 1777 for 3 years, and forced to pay a fine, Joseph only served 3 months from Aug. 17, 1777, to Nov. 30, 1777. In service to the Northward, which I take to be Vermont, where his brother Ebenezer was. So perhaps he escaped to Canada as a Tory. Ebenezer always said that he had 2 brothers who were Tories and fled to Canada. Yet I find a Joseph Carley, Jr., who witnessed a will at Canajohary, N.Y., Oct. 13, 1812. He would have been 60 years old then, if it was the same Joseph. I do not know. He could have come back to America after the war, and after Ebenezer went out to Marathon, N.Y.
