Sarah Ward appears to have been born around 1819 at Great Hale in Lincolnshire, daughter of Ann Ward, formerly Allam, and her husband Luke Ward, a carpenter. Sarah was not baptised as an infant. The family appear to have been Baptists at this time; Sarah's maternal grandfather, John Allam, was deacon of the Baptist chapel at nearby Heckington.

Sarah's grandfather John Allam died in 1841, leaving a cottage at Great Hale to Sarah in his will. Later that year the 1841 census finds Sarah working as a servant for a clergyman at Silk Willoughby, about seven miles west of Great Hale.

By 1843 Sarah had left Lincolnshire and moved to Peterborough, seemingly to work as a servant for Owen Davys, who was the Archdeacon of Northampton and therefore quite a senior clergyman. She was baptised by him in 1843, and her abode was given as "Minster Precincts", being the small area of the city immediately surrounding the cathedral. The 1851 and 1861 censuses each find Sarah living in the Minster Precincts working as a servant in Owen Davys' household. In 1851 she was described as a house servant, whilst in 1861 she was working as the cook. Back in Great Hale, Sarah's father died in 1844, and her mother died in 1857.

On 11th November 1862, when she was probably in her early forties, Sarah married a farmer called Robert Goodacre who was from Thurlby near Bourne in Lincolnshire. They were married at Peterborough Cathedral by Owen Davys, Sarah's long-time employer. After their marriage Sarah and Robert moved to Thurlby where Robert farmed. They do not appear to have had any children.

The 1871 census finds Robert and Sarah living in the Northorpe area of Thurlby, and Robert was farming 76 acres. They had one servant living with them.

In 1881 Robert and Sarah were at Holsworthy in Devon, some 250 miles from Thurlby. Robert was described as a farm bailiff. They later returned to Thurlby.

Sarah died at Thurlby on 8th May 1889. She was said to be 70 years old. Robert survived her by just under ten years.
