Sarah Walby was baptised on 3rd November 1776 at Aston in Hertfordshire, daughter of Alice Walby, formerly Wright, and her husband George Walby, a labourer. Sarah was married at Aston on 29th January 1803 to a John Leaver, who was from the neighbouring parish of Shephall. They do not appear to have had any children.

The 1841 census finds Sarah and John living at Shephall Green. John was described as an agricultural labourer. They also had living with them a James Piddle, who was Sarah's nephew, being her sister Ann's son. The Tithe Applotment for Shephall parish in 1845 lists John as one of three occupiers of a row of cottages on the east side of Shephall Green. Comparison with modern maps show the building is still there, now converted to one house and called 23 Shephall Green, which is a listed building, dating back to the seventeenth century.

John died in 1854, aged 78. Sarah survived him by two years. She was buried at Shephall on 2nd October 1856, aged about 80.
