John Leaver was baptised on 10th December 1775 at Shephall in Hertfordshire, son of Richard and Elizabeth Leaver.

On 29th January 1803, aged 27, John married Sarah Walby at the neighbouring parish of Aston. They do not appear to have had any children.

The 1841 census finds John and Sarah living at Shephall Green. John was described as an agricultural labourer. The Tithe Applotment for Shephall parish in 1845 lists John as one of three occupiers of a row of cottages on the east side of Shephall Green. Comparison with modern maps show the building is still there, now converted to one house and called 23 Shephall Green, which is a listed building, dating back to the seventeenth century.

John died in 1854, aged 78. Sarah survived him by two years.
