By 1861 Sarah had left home and was working as a general servant for a clerk's family in Church Street in Crewkerne.
In 1863 Sarah married a Robert Simmonds in the Sherborne area of Dorset. He was from Sherborne and they appear there in the 1871 census, by which time they had two children. Robert was described as being town crier. Sarah's younger sister Emily was visiting on census night.
