Edwin Tett was born in 1852 at Crewkerne in Somerset, son of a glove sewer and laundress named Susan Tett, formerly Forsey, and her husband Joseph Tett, an agricultural labourer. The family lived at Hewish, a hamlet in the parish of Crewkerne but some way out of the town itself. Edwin was baptised in 1853 in the neighbouring parish of Wayford, which was nearer to Hewish than the church at Crewkerne.

Edwin appears in both the 1861 and 1871 censuses living at Hewish with his parents and siblings. By 1871 he was working as an agricultural labourer.

In 1876 Edwin married Louisa Tett. They married in Somerset but then moved to the Todmorden area of Yorkshire. They had a son, William, born there in 1877, but Louisa died shortly after giving birth, aged just 21.

Edwin appears in the 1881 census living with his sister Christiana and her family, who had also moved to Yorkshire. Edwin has yet to be researched after 1881.
