Emily Augusta Tett was born in 1857 at Crewkerne in Somerset, daughter of a glove sewer and laundress named Susan Tett, formerly Forsey, and her husband Joseph Tett, an agricultural labourer. She appears in the 1861 census living with her parents and siblings at Hewish in the parish of Crewkerne.

The 1871 census finds Emily visiting her older sister Sarah, who had gone to live at Sherborne in Dorset and was married to the town crier, Robert Simmonds.

Emily returned to Hewish and in 1880 married an agricultural labourer named Robert Arnold, who was from Uplyme in Devon. They appear in the 1881 census with a baby daughter named Harriet, living with Emily's parents at Hewish. Emily was working as a seamstress at this time. Emily and Robert appear to have had two more children during the 1880s, at Hewish and the nearby hamlet of Woolminstone. In 1890 Emily's mother Susan died.

The 1891 census finds Emily and Robert and their children had moved away from the Crewkerne area to Lillington in Dorset. Emily's recently bereaved father was staying with them. Emily has yet to be researched after 1891.
