Sarah Ann Steele was born in 1869 in the Kirkstall area of Leeds, daughter of a bootmaker named James Steele and his wife Elizabeth. The 1871 census finds Sarah living with her parents and brother in the Armley area of Leeds. In 1881 the family was living at 34 Rutland Terrace in Leeds, although it appears they had moved away from Leeds and back between the censuses, as one of Sarah's younger brother was born at Bishop Auckland in County Durham.

On 4th April 1887, Sarah married Arthur Greaves Firth. They appear to have had at least two children together. The 1891 census finds Sarah living back with her parents, whilst Arthur was living with his parents. He has not been positively traced after 1891.

Sarah has not been found in the 1901 census. Her next sighting is in 1907, when she was married in Liverpool to a Daniel Redmond. She gave her name as 'Sarah Ann Greaves', using Arthur's middle name as her surname, and described herself as a widow. By the 1911 census Daniel and Sarah were living apart, both in the Seacombe area of Wallasey in Cheshire, but Sarah with her parents who had also moved there and Daniel in a lodging house. In the 1911 census, Sarah had also reverted to her maiden name, although she still described herself as married.

Sarah has not been traced after 1911. Daniel remarried in 1924, describing himself as a widower.
