Sarah Speed was baptised on 5th July 1817 at Muston in Leicestershire, daughter of Ann Speed. Her baptism record does not name her father, but when she married she reported that he was a labourer called Charles Birch.

On 25th June 1838, Sarah was married at Muston to John Singleton, an agricultural labourer from Foston, about six miles away and across the county boundary into Lincolnshire. After their marriage they settled in Foston, having nine children there between 1839 and 1861.

The 1841 finds John, Sarah and the two children they had at the time each living in a separate house in Foston. Each census from 1851 to 1871 finds John and Sarah living together in Foston with a selection of their children. By 1881 all the children had left home.

John died in 1889, aged 82. The 1891 census finds Sarah living alone in Foston on the Great North Road. Her name was given as Sally on that occasion, which may therefore have been how she was known.

By 1901 Sarah had left Foston and moved to the neighbouring village of Long Bennington to live with her youngest daughter, who had married a farmer.

Sarah died at Long Bennington in 1902, aged 85. She was buried back at Foston on 21st September 1902.
