John Singleton was baptised on 22nd February 1807 at Long Bennington in Lincolnshire, son of Martha Singleton, formerly Burden, and her husband William Singleton, a labourer and huckster. John was the second of their three children. In 1811, when John was only four years old, his mother died.

The following year, John's father married again, with an Elizabeth Ingram becoming John's stepmother. William and Elizabeth went on to have several more children together who were John's half-siblings. Some time between 1816 and 1818 the family moved from Long Bennington to the neighbouring village of Foston.

In 1828, when John was 21 years old, his father died.

On 25th June 1838, aged 31, John married Sarah Speed. She was from Muston in Leicestershire, about six miles from Foston. They married at Muston, but returned to Foston after their marriage, having nine children there between 1839 and 1861.

The 1841 finds John, Sarah and the two children they had at the time each living in a separate house in Foston. Each census from 1851 to 1871 finds John and Sarah living together in Foston with a selection of their children. John worked as an agricultural labourer. By 1881 all the children had left home.

John died in 1889, aged 82. He was buried at Foston on 20th December 1889. Sarah survived him by nearly thirteen years.
