Biography of Sarah Paddock Kee

SARAH PADDOCK (Sarah Bradford, Samuel, John, William, Gov William) b Jan 6, 1754, Pembroke, Plymouth Co, Mass. d Mar 14, 1844, at the home of her son Ebenezer, Greene Twp, Trumbull Co, Ohio. Aged 90 Yrs. DeEtte (Kee) Dodge who died in 1949, the dau of Printice D Kee, wrote long prior her death “History has it that my great [great] grandmother [Sarah] smoked a clay pipe and that while reaching for a coal from the fireplace to light her pipe, she fell and was severely burned so she died”. Buried with husband and five of her seven children, Old South Cemetery, Greene Twp, on the property of her son Ephraim called the Wild Plum Lot. Her small tombstone “Aged 90” with death date was still standing near 1950 only to vanish prior to that of Steward in 1968, both stones being carried away by vandals. The tombstone of Steward was to the right of the entrance next to the fence with lettering facing the sunrise and no doubt next to his wife.

In the memorial to the “Pioneer Women of the Western Reserve” dated 1896, special attention is called to our most magnificent ancestress that reads “Perhaps no one in the little woodland town left more lasting impression than Mrs Stewart [Steward] Kee, Sr. (Sarah Padduc). She was a brainy woman, of strong personality, a rigid Calvinist, an omnivorous reader, and of remarkable memory. She loved the OPEN AIR AND SUNSHINE, and with an annex of children attached to her apron on either side, could hoe in the garden, prepare an appetizing meal, or talk theology with equal facility and felicity. She lived a long life, and left upon her numerous descendants the stamp of her large intellectuality”.

Myra L Kee of Greene said of her “She had great ability, quite a politician”. She married Mar 30, 1775, Ware, Mass, STEWARD KEE b June 14, 1753, Killingly, Conn. His tombstone seen by Kee Rodgers in 1968 just prior to its disappearance. A reddish slate standing a mere two feet in height “STEWARD KEE…DIED…May 31, 1833...Aged 80 Yrs”. He was the son of Steward and Hannah (Brooks) Kee and grandson of Ebenezer and Susannah (Cady) McKEE and great grandson of Daniel MacKAY of Kirkcudbright, Scotland who was brought to America in 1652 by the English as a Scottish slave at age near 20.
