    She was the daughter of Nicholas Massey (1732 - 1817), a Captain in the Maryland Sea Duty Militia, and Henrietta Whaley Massey (1736 - 1773). Sarah's father moved to North Carolina from Maryland by way of the West Virginia corridor, probably around the year 1767, where they bought land north of the Catawba River in what was then Rowan County, North Carolina.
