(Research):Sarah KNOTT was born in October 1829 at Bailie's Location in Lower Albany (Bathurst). She probably accompanied her parents to Tarkas Post in 1844 as she was only 15 at the time. Sarah moved to Grahamstown in 1847 with her parents and by her own account must have entered service or other employment as she wrote to her brother George that she and her sister Martha has supported themselves for many years. On the 27 March 1855 Sarah married John MILLER, a lieutenant in the Albany Mounted Police, on her brother's farm Bothas Post. Sarah was 26 and John was 32 years of ages. Her place of residence was given as Grahamstown and his as Lower Albany, Bathurst area. One of the witnesses was her brother George. John MILLER transferred to the Armed Mounted Police Force which was established on the 1 December 1855. He served in this force as a subinspector for three years from 1856 to 1858. He was paid 11 shillings per day. John probably left the police in 1859 to take up farming. Writing to George KNOTT from Dassies Scheur Farm [now Retreat] on 2 November 1867 John MILLER said that he was sending to George 88 sheep [hamels, i.e. wethers] for the rent of the farm at eight shillings each and six for the interest in all 94. He concluded the letter with, "as regards the Fish River I never thought when first I went there I would have been so long as I was always expecting to get a place. I have always felt so grateful for your kindness and now I will be quite glad to pay you any reasonable rent if I have to sell all my sheep to do it with - for it is not very nice to be told I never cut a foot path on my place." It is not clear for which farm the rent in the form of sheep was sent nor which is the Fish River farm. Breede Drift Farm and Dassies Scheur arm, both of which lie on the Great Fish River were owned by George KNOTT. John and Sarah were on Dassies Scheur Farm in 1874 for it was there that Ann KNOTT, Sarah's mother died on the 4 June 1874. SOURCE: Knotts of South Africa 929.2 KNO
