Sarah Maria Hughes was born in 1858 at Bledington in Gloucestershire, daughter of Elizabeth Hughes, formerly Keyte, and her husband William Hughes, who was the station master at Chipping Norton Junction Station. Her father William appears to have died when she was still very small. By 1861, she was living with her widowed mother and her maternal grandparents in Evesham (apparently mistranscribed as Clara, although the handwriting is not entirely clear). The family moved to Broadway some time between 1861 and 1871.
