    ... The will of this Howell Hines is filed in Southampton County, Virginia, dated November 4, 1789 and entered for record December 18, 1789, in which his family is named. Deed Book 4, page 349, in Southampton County, contains references to his wife Ann, and his children as well. The will reads partially, as follows:

    Item: I give unto my beloved wife Ann Hines the use of all my lands during her natural life and after her death to be sold and the money arising therefrom to be equally divided among my children to wit Dolly C., Sarah and Elizabeth Hines, to them and their heirs...

    Item: to my beloved wife Ann Hines for the support of herself and children Dolly C., Sarah and Elizabeth Hines during her widowhood the following negroes, viz, Moses, Tom, Ned, Anthony, Aggy, Cate, Fanny and Milly, all the household and kitchen furniture and plantation utensils, my bay horse named Ball, the choice of the stock of my cattle, all my stock of hogs omitting them which are to be fattened and all my stock of sheep, one thousand two hundred pounds of fat pork, one side beef, fifty barrells of corn and all my crop of pease, cotton and potatoes, all my old bacon and fresh provided she should marry, I then give her during her life the following negroes Aggy, Fanny and Milly and at her marriage I desire that Moses, Tom, Ned, Anthony and Cate be hired out and the money arising therefrom to be appropriated to the use of the above mentioned children...
