Sarah Cady and Peter Chase

Sarah Cady and Peter Chase settled on a farm in Cornish. In 1790, the family of Peter Chase was seven persons at Cornish: two males 16 and over, two males under 16, and three females.[10] Peter Chase did not leave a will and his estate entered probate 7 August 1792 with widow Sarah Chase requesting that her brother-in-law Joshua Chase be named administrator. At inventory, 325 acres of land were valued at £600 and personal estate was £192.17.6. The distribution of the real estate was made 19 April 1796. Seventy-five acres taken from the west side of the old farm was assigned to Sarah as her dower. One hundred acres were assigned to son Peter Chase with value of £220. Distribution of 25 acres was made to daughter Susanna and fifty-three acres to daughter Elizabeth, both these lots valued at £50. Daughter Prudencia received 47 acres valued at £50 and daughter Sarah received 23 acres valued at £23.6.8.[11] On 15 August 1811, heirs of the estate of Peter Chase, in consideration of $100, quitclaimed to Albert Rich of Cornish a minor under the age of twenty-one their interest in a certain parcel in Cornish derived from the estate of Peter Chase. Those heirs were Thomas Young, Sarah Young, Benjamin Rich, Prudentia Batcheller, Peter Chase, and Sarah Chase.[12] Peter and Sarah’s daughter Elizabeth Chase did not marry and left a small personal estate. Her estate entered probate 15 August 1811 with Peter Chase as administrator at the request of Sarah Young, Prudensha Bacheler, and Sarah Chase. The heirs of her estate were brother Peter Chase, sister Sarah Chase, sister Prudentia Batchelor, and Emeline Rich and Caroline Rich, children of sister Susanna.[13]

Sarah Cady and Thomas Young

The widow Sarah Chase married Thomas Young who settled in Cornish about 1785 having served through the Revolution.[14] Thomas was first married to Abigail Pike who died in 1792. Sarah and Thomas resided on part of the farm property from the estate of Peter Chase. Thomas Young of Cornish made an application on 8 April 1818 for a pension based on his service in the Revolution. About 1 May 1775, he enlisted from Brookfield, Massachusetts as a private in the company of Capt. Sylvanus Walker and regiment of Col. Danielson of the Continental army for a term of eight months. At the expiration of that term, he enlisted for one year in the company of Capt. Carter of the Continental army. He had further enlistments in 1780 and 1781, this last enlistment for a term of three years in the company of Capt. Thomas Hunt and regiment of Col. Henry Jackson. His final discharge was at West Point on 30 June 1784. He was at the Battle of White Plains. Thomas was credited with five years, 11 months service.[15] On 18 July 1820, Thomas Young aged 66 years and resident of Cornish provided additional information on his circumstances. His occupation was husbandry and tanner, but he was unable to work due to rheumatism in “every part of my body.” His household was his wife Sarah aged sixty-one years in November of tolerable health, daughter Mary Young about aged twenty-two who had a number of afflictions, and young son Lyman aged eighteen. He gave the total value of his property as $354.99. Other supporting statements reported that his first wife died in the summer of 1792 leaving him with small children. He then married Sarah Chase, the widow of Peter Chase. After his marriage, Thomas Young resided on the former farm property of Peter Chase. The record also gives that his wife Sarah died in May 1826. On 21 October 1823, Mary Young aged 26 years of Cornish and daughter of Thomas Young provided a statement in support of his application.
