Census records indicate that Sarah was born about 1808 in North Carolina, her father was Henry Wilson, but his name is the only information available at this time and the identity of her mother has not been established. Sarah married Levi Godwin around 1826 and they had twelve known children. Sarah apparently died around 1878 based on Levi's second marriage to Catherine Price 1850-1930 in Pollard, Escambia, Alabama on 04 March 1880.

Levi's first wife is not Sarah Barrow, that claim is an error that has been copied many times. Some researchers cited North Carolina Quaker records from 1822 to support the Barrow name, however, according to the Alabama State census of 1820, Levi's father William was already in Alabama by 1820, so Levi must have been in Alabama by then as well. The Quakers Sarah Barrow and Levi Godwin are different people that remained in North Carolina as subsequent census records indicate.

Another source of confusion may be that Levi and Sarah's oldest son William Creal Godwin 1827-1895 married Sarah Elizabeth Barrow 1830-1900.
