His mother

There is a family story that Samuel's mother was a Dutch woman who was a housemaid at a large house, that she never married, and that Samuel, her only son, was the illegitimate son of the owner. In the bishop's records (i1) Samuel is shown as the illegitimate first son of Betty Spraikes. It is possible that Betty was the daughter of John Sprake and Sarah Gaudby, see: Family:John_Sprake_and_Sarah_Gaudby_(1), or she may have been related to him but perhaps as not his daughter. Perhaps she came from Holland to Thorne because she had realtives there.

Description of Samuel

In the 1950s Arthur Douglas Sprakes gave this description of his great grandfather to his grandaughter Susan.

My Great Grandfather pulled gooseberries, he lived in Bridge Street opposite shop for 4’ per day. He was married twice his first wife was (called) Brittain. His wife used to turn him out and he slept outside. (Once) when he was drunk he turned a cart load of Coal over. He changed at the age of 40. His second wife was a vision, he turned and gave his heart to god.

The year he died he and Elizabeth were living in Doncaster with son Charles (widowed), and his occupation is given as Bricklayer's Labourer.
