Sprakes family legend has an alternative story: The story is that Samuel's mother came straight from Holland and was a Dutch woman. If this is the case she may have been related to John Sprake but pehaps not his daughter.

The family story is that Samuel's mother was a housemaid at a large house, that Samuel, her only son, was the illegitimate son of the owner, and that she never married.
