Information on Samuel Smith
Some sources claim that Samuel Smith was a first-cousin of his wife, Mary Smith. Additional research is necessary to prove this claim.
Possibly records of this Samuel Smith:
From "Tennessee Cousins" by Worth S. Ray, pg. 163 (Sullivan County, TN):
- William Wallace was a Justice of the Peace in 1779; also William Christie, Isaac Shelby, John Dunham and Samuel Smith.
From "The Annals of Tennessee to the End of the Eighteenth Century", by James Gettys McGready Ramsey, pg. 189:
- Sullivan county Records show that in February, 1780, the county court met at the house of Moses Looney. A commission was presented, appointing as Justices of the Peace Isaac Shelby, David Looney, William Christie, (Christian?) John Dunham, William Wallace, and Samuel Smith; John Rhea was appointed Clerk ; Nathaniel Clark, Sheriff till court in course.
Ibid, pg. 356:
- Policy dictated that he should be selected from the western people themselves, and that he should be one who, from his past position, was identified, in all his sympathies and interests, with the West. General Evan Shelby, high in the confidence of his countrymen everywhere, remarkable for his probity, candour, good sense and patriotism, was requested by Gov. Caswell to take charge of this delicate negotiation; and, in conjunction with others, whose assistance he solicited, met a Commission from the State of Franklin, on the 20th day of March, 1787, at the house of Samuel Smith. At this conference Gov. Sevier represented his own government, aided by such of its friends as he chose to invite.
Ibid, pg. 358:
- CONFERENCE AT SMITH'S - At a conference held at the house of Samuel Smith, Esquire, on the 20th day of March, 1787, between the Honourable Evan Shelby, Esquire, and sundry officers, of the one part, and the Honourable John Sevier and sundry officers, of the other part. Whereas, disputes have arisen concerning the propriety and legality of the State of Franklin, and the sovereignty and jurisdiction of the State of North-Carolina over the said state and the people residing therein.
From Pension Application of Zebulon Smith in Sullivan County, Tennessee:
- ... He (Zebulon Smith) states that in the fall of 1781 as well as now recollected in substitution in now Sullivan County Tennessee then the State of North Carolina in the place of Samuel Smith of said County, & enrolled under Captain Toppin or Wallace & Colonel Shelby, was marched on to Santee River in South Carolina by way of Chester & Camden to Santee where he joined General Marion, where he enlisted under Colonel Moore [Macon? From: Historical Sketches, Volume 10, 1976, pages 22-28, published by The Historical Society of Southwest Virginia:
- In 1786, Hawkins County was taken from Sullivan County, Tennessee. A Commission including Joseph Martin, James McNeil, John Duncan, William King, Evan Shelby, Samuel Smith, and John Scott were selected to find a site for the county courthouse. Apparently, they did nothing about it, and a new commission was named in 1795.
