We find Samuel on the 1830, 1840 and 1850 census living in Sugarloaf Township, Columbia County, Pennsylvania. In 1860 we find him in Benton Township, Sugarloaf County living with his son Elisha. His gravestone in Rohrsburg Cemetery, Benton Township, Pennsylvania lists his death date as 24 Feb 1862. The 1850 census gives an age corresponding to birth year of 1787, but that appears to be an error.

We believe that he is the Samuel Shultz listed in the will of Phillip Shultz. Phillip is also buried in Rohrsburg Cemetery. Our research indicates that almost all of the Shultz burials in Rorhsburg Cemetery are closely related to Phillip. Even though we don't have a specific document linking Samuel to Phillip, we feel it is reasonable to believe that he is a close relative of Phillip. A son seems to be the only relationship that makes sense.

As furthur evidence of the relationship we note that on the 1840 census in Sugarloaf Township show 4 Shultz families on the same page--Samuel and Jesee (probably son of Samuel) , Philip (probably son of Daniel-son of Phillip) and Isaac (probably son of Daniel-son of Phillip).

On the 1830 Census in Sugarloaf we find on the same page--Samuel, Isaac (probably son of Daniel), John (probably son of Daniel) and Mary (probably widow of Samuel-son of Daniel)

It would appear that two sons of Phillip, Samuel and Daniel had settled in Sugarloaf with him.

The 1860 census showing him living in Benton Township instead of Sugarloaf may be misleading. Benton Township was formed from part of Sugarloaf Township shortly after the 1850 census. The 1860 census shows Samuel as the head of household. It shows him living in the vicinity of the Hess and Krickbaum families, among others. The 1850 census shows the same two families living nearby. He may be living in the same house in 1860 as in 1850, but the political boundaries just have changed.
