RESEARCH NOTES

Death: It is noted by Ian McIntyre in his biography of Sir Joshua Reynolds "Joshua Reynolds: The Life and Times of the First President of the Royal Academy", Published 2003 by Allen Lane The Penguin Press ISBN 0-713-99329-4 On page 33 that

"The memorial tablet which William Cotton later had placed in the church of Plympton St Maurice gives 1746 as the year of his death, but the parish register shows that he was buried on 26 December1745. The mistake presumably arose because of confusion between the Julian and Gregorian calendars. Samuel was sixty-four at the time of his death"

Because of this mistake, many Ancestry and My Heritage trees have the wrong date of death.

Until quite recently, Find a Grave also had the wrong date of death, it has since been corrected.

It is well known that Samuel and Theophila had eleven children, some Ancestry trees would have you beleive that there were 12,or even 13 two bogus sons listed as Thomas and John. This is incorrect.

This pedigree was edited by Colby, Frederic Thomas, 1827-1899.

He was related to all 5 families and he edited many genealogical works including some for the Harlequin Society
