III. CAPT. SAMUEL PICKENS, third child of Israel and Martha Pickens. Born April 28, 1743 in Lunenburg Co. VA. (Charlotte) - d. June 9, 1821. m. JANE CARRIGAN, of Cabarrus Co. N.C. They made their home in Cabarrus County. In 1754 he moved with his mother to N.C. Dec. 18, 1769 bought 472 acres, Mecklenburg Co. on Rocky River and Clark's Creek. This land now in Cabarrus County three miles from Poplar Tent Church. On Oct 9, 1783 received State grant of 200 acres on Clarks Creek. in 1783 witnessed deed, " Hannah Clark, Widdow of late deceased James Clark." Jan. 1789 he with George Davis, ordered to administer estate of James Clark. He married Jane Carrigan about 1769. They had:

1. JAMES PICKENS - b. 1775 - d. May 5, 1749 in Marengo Co. Alabama. m. MARY CARSON, June 23, 1808, Cabarrus Co. N.C. Had no Children. He was in Alabama (Mississippi Territory) as early as 1810. Mary Carson Pickens died in 1853. They reared several nephews and niecies, among them being James Pickens Rousseau. James Pickens was active in the establishment of Alabama as a state in 1819.

2. REBECCA PICKENS - b._______? - d. January 25, 1827. m. ROBERT STEELE, on March 12, 1807 in Cabarrus Co. N.C. Descendants, if any, are not known.

3. MARTHA PICKENS - b. ______? - d. July 14, 1817, Unmarried. 4. ISRAEL PICKENS - b. Jan. 31, 1780 - d. April 24, 1827. m. MARTHA ORVILLE LENOIR, on June 9, 1814 at Ft. Defiance, Wilkes Co. N.C. Daughter of Gen. William Lenoir. ISRAEL PICKENS, was Governor of Alabama he received and entertained General LaFayette on his visit to the state. (See letter he wrote describing this event in the Appendix.) They had: (1). JULIA ANN MIRA PICKENS - b. Aug. 23, 1815 Burke Co. N.C. baptised May 20, 1818 at St. Stephens, Ala. m. Lt. CHILIAN S. HOWE, Jan 5, 1836 at Ft. Defiance, Wilkes Co. N.C. They had: (a) JULIA ELLEN HOWE, b. Jan 23, 1839 (b) LAURA CAROLINE HOWE, b. Sept. 19, 1841, Marengo Co. Ala. (c) JOANNA HOWE - b. March 3, 1845, Chickawaw Co. Mississippi (2). ANDREW LENOIR PICKENS - b. July 24, 1817 - d. March 14, 1854 m. CAROLINE GORDON in Columbus, Miss. May 1843. Had: (a) JULIA PICKENS - b. 1846 (There may have been others) (3). ISRAEL LEONIDAS PICKENS - b. Jan. 29, 1820, St. Stephens, Ala. m. ELIZA NELSON, in 1849. Living in Marengo Co. Ala in 1850. (4). WILLIAM JAMES PICKENS - b. June 13, 1823 - d. Sept. 25, 1824 5. SAMUEL PICKENS, JUNIOR, b. 1791 - died June 23, 1855 in Alabama. m.(1) MARY EVERARD MEADE, Feb. 4, 1830 - she died 1831 - no issue m.(2) SELINA LOUISA LENOIR, Dau of Col. Thomas Lenoir, g-dau. of Gen. William Lenoir. (b. 3/15/1813 d. 3/29/1839). They had:

m.(3) MARY GAILLARD THOMAS, b. 1813, Charleston, S.C. d. 1873. Samuel Pickens built "Unbria" 10 miles from Greenboro, Ala. All his wives are buried there, and himself. Umbria still owned in 1953 by a granddaughter of Col. Pickens. Children of Samuel Pickens and Mary Gaillard Thomas: (1) SAMUEL PICKENS - died unmarried (2) JAMES PICKENS - married JULIET DAMER, They had: (a) MARY GAILLARD PICKENS - m. GEORGE CUNNINGHAM. No children (b) JULIET MARIE PICKENS - m. HENRY WEBB. No Children (c) FLORA ELOISE PICKENS - m. WILLIAM G. LUNDFORD JR. No Children (3) WILLIAM PICKENS, son of Samuel and Mary Gaillard Pickens m. Helen Withers, They had one son; (a) William Carrigan Pickens - m. Lucy Stickney and they had: i. William Carrigan Pickens, Jr. ii. Lucy Prior Pickens iii. Helen Withers Pickens (4) John Pickens - died young (5) Mary Pickens - m. Robert Withers. no children (6) Louisa Pickens, daughter of Samuel and Mary Gaillard Pickens. m. Francis D. Pickens, of Pendleton Dist. S.C. He was the great grandson of General Andrew Pickens of S.C. They had: i. Thomas Barksdale Pickens all live in Birmingham. ii. Mary Gaillard Pickens iii. Louisa Hunt Pickens iv. Elilza Miles Pickens (7) Israel Pickens - m. Mary Gillard Sawyer (see below) 6. JOHN C. PICKENS, son of Capt. Samuel and Jane Carriagan Pickens Born about 1800 - died in 1844 in Green Co. Alabama He is listed as an early settler in Green Co. Ala. Was in the State militia and is called General John Pickens. In 1840 census he owned 52 slaves. Left will in Greene Co. Mentioned no wife. Mentioned little boy Alfred. 7. WILLIAM PICKENS, son of Capt. Samuel and Jane Carrigan Pickens b. ca. 1802 - died March 31, 1827 in Greene Co. Alabama. He was unmarried. His estate was administered by brother Samuel Pickens and brother in law William L. Duffy. Mentioned in Gov. Israel Pickens letter. 8. ISABELLA PICKENS - b.__?__ d.__?__ m. Thompson Hunt, on Oct 27, 1819 in Cabarrus Co. N.C. They lived in Greene Co Alabama nothing further is known 9. JANE PICKENS - b.__?__ died __?__ m. William L. Duffey, Jan. 8, 1821 in Cabarrus Co. N.C. He died in Green Co. Alabama in 1844, Final settlement of estate was made by Samuel Pickens and John C. Pickens, administrators. They had children: (a) Julia Duffey - m. H.C. Childress and they had; (i.) Jennie Childress - m. Hudson Burton. had a. Hudson Jr. b. Herbert c. Julia (ii.) Herbert Childress - m. Anna Jones, had a. Julia b. Mollie (iii.) Annie Childress - Edward Wheeler had a. Julia b. Sue c. Annie 10. ROBERT PICKENS, Believed to be son of Capt. Samuel and Jane Pickens - Born about 1800 - died May 7, 1847 in Alabama. m. Mary Baker, March 19, 1829 in Cabarrus Co. N.C., dau. of Elijah and Mary Wiley Baker. she was born April 28, 1803. Robert Pickens is listed as a brother in a deed in Greene Co. Alabama in settling the estate of John C. Pickens of Greene Co. Robert sold land in Cabarrus Co. N.C. that Capt. Samuel Pickens had deeded to James Pickens his son in 1808. This sale occured 1828 and 1829. In 1853 ISRAEL PICKENS, son of Robert Pickens living in Mobile Ala. sold land in Mecklenburg Co. N.C. which he had inherited from his grandmother, Mary Wiley Baker.
