    1 Jul 1846: Graduated from the USMA (where he was the roommate of Thomas J. Jackson for a year), brevetted 2nd Lieut.

    1846-48: Fought in the Mexican War at Cerro Gordo, Contreras, Churubusco, and Molino del Rey. Commended for valor, brevetted 1st Lieut., and given command of one of the five select companies that formed a city police guard in Mexico City.

    1849: Resigned from the army, began practicing law with his father in Clinton County, Kentucky.

    Oct 1857: Moved with his father and his family to Texas for economic reasons. Purchased five acres south of Paris.

    c.1860: District Attorney of Lamar County.

    1861: Elected to Texas State Senate but sent his father in his stead because he was also raising a regiment for CSA service.

    1 Jan 1862: Maxey's newly formed 9th Texas Infantry left Texas for Kentucky to join Gen. Albert Sidney Johnston.

    Mar 1862: Promoted to Brig. General. Fought at Port Hudson, in Vicksburg campaign, and at Jackson, Mississippi, leading several regiments.

    27 Dec 1863: Appointed commander in Indian Territory.

    21 Feb 1865: Given command of a division of cavalry and sent to sent to Beauchamp Springs, near Houston. Plagued by heavy desertions.

    22 May 1865: Resigned his command because the war was no longer tenable. Did not discover until after the end of the war that he had been nominated & confirmed Major General by the CSA Congress.

    28 Jan 1874 Elected to the first of two terms in the U.S. Senate, where he did much for the state's improvement. He was particularly well qualified to serve Texas during the difficult years after the war, for he believed that the war ended at Appomattox and adopted reason and moderation as his guidelines. He gained friends among the Democrats, north and south and was a friend of generals Grant & Sherman. Subsequently enjoyed a long retirement as a respected political figure.
