The original 2-volume Handbook of Texas, edited by Walter Prescott Webb, was published in 1952 after nearly a decade's work by the Texas State Historical Association, with a third, supplementary volume being added later. The New Handbook of Texas (7,000 pages in six vols.), compiled in partnership with the University of Texas, was the result of 15 years of research and writing by specialists (not all of them academic) in many areas of Texas studies, and was published in 1996. All articles in the work were signed. The New Handbook was put online in 1999 and is now being continually expanded and updated. Because of the high level of the original scholarship and the multiple layers of vetting, cross-checking, and editing, the Handbook is generally regarded as the best all-in-one reference source for almost any topic in Texas history, geography, biography, sociology, politics, economics, literature, business, and scientific research.
