Samuel Linney was baptised on 8th November 1818 at Leighton Buzzard in Bedfordshire, son of a washerwoman called Mary Linney, formerly Tring, and her husband Thomas Linney, an agricultural labourer. The 1841 census finds Samuel living with his parents and siblings at America Place in Leighton Buzzard, and working as a rail road labourer, presumably on the London & Birmingham Railway which had opened three years earlier and had a station called Leighton which served Leighton Buzzard, although the station was actually just over the county boundary into the neighbouring parish of Linslade in Buckinghamshire.
On 6th February 1844, aged 25, Samuel married Sarah Brandom, a plaiter. She already had a three year old son called William, and in the 1841 census she had been living in the same household as Samuel's brother John and his family. Samuel and Sarah went on to have three children together: Jane in 1844, George in 1846 and Thomas in 1849.
Sarah died either giving birth to Thomas or shortly afterwards: she was buried on 29th April 1849 at the town's parish church of All Saints, and baby Thomas was baptised there the same day. She was 26 years old.
The 1851 census finds Samuel looking after his three children and his stepson William, who also adopted the surname Linney. They were still living in the America area of Leighton Buzzard, and Samuel was working as an agricultural labourer. Samuel's father died in 1854 and his mother died in 1861.
Samuel was still in the America area of town in 1861, by which time a widow called Elizabeth Parrott (formerly Adams) was living with him and described as his housekeeper. They were still living together in 1871, and eventually married on 13th December 1878, by which time Samuel was 60 years old. They were married for just under ten years, appearing together in the 1881 census living at Heath Road in Leighton Buzzard. Elizabeth died in 1888.
Samuel appears in the 1891 census living alone in a four roomed house on Heath Road. He died on 12th November 1897 at 26 Heath Road, aged 79.
