James Linney was born in about 1824 at Leighton Buzzard in Bedfordshire, son of a washerwoman named Mary Linney, formerly Tring, and her husband Thomas Linney, an agricultural labourer. The 1841 census finds James living with his parents and siblings at America Place[8] and working as a rail road labourer, presumably on the London and Birmingham Railway which had opened three years earlier just west of the town.

On 7th June 1847, James married Ann Pratt. They went on to have six children together between 1847 and 1863. In 1851 they were living in Leighton Buzzard at America, next door to James's parents, and James was working as an agricultural labourer. James's father died in 1854. In 1856 Ann had an altercation with James's brother William; he owed her money for bread and flour, and when she asked for it back he threw her out of the house, struck her on the head and knocked her into the road. William was found guilty of assault.

James's mother died in March 1861. The census the following month finds James and Ann living at Heath Road. They had moved again by 1871 to another part of town, called Lamsey.

In 1881 James was living at Laburnum Terrace on Brickhill Road, with his son Albert, widowed daughter Hannah and her three children. James's wife Ann was away from home on census night, working as a monthly nurse for a local innkeeper and his wife who had recently had a baby.

James died on 16th February 1890 at South Street in Leighton Buzzard. Ann died the following year.
