Mary Tring's origins have yet to be established for certain. She appears to have been born around 1787 at Leighton Buzzard in Bedfordshire.

Mary's first confirmed sighting is on 27th September 1810, when she married a Thomas Linney. They appear to have had several children at Leighton Buzzard, although baptisms have yet to be found for all of them. There also appears to have been some confusion in the registers, with Mary's name several times given as Elizabeth.

The 1841 census finds Mary living with her husband Thomas, who was then working as a railway labourer, at America Place in Leighton Buzzard. Some of their younger children (including Samuel, whose baptism record had given his mother's name as Elizabeth) were living with them. Ten years later the family was still at America in Leighton Buzzard, but with Mary and Thomas living just as a couple, but with several of their now adult children living within a few doors of them. At this time Mary was working as a washerwoman.

Thomsa died in 1854. Mary outlived him by nearly seven years. In September 1860 she was admitted to the Three Counties Asylum at Stotfold, over 20 miles from Leighton Buzzard. The asylum had opened earlier that year to cater for patients from across Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and Huntingdonshire. Mary spent the last six months of her life there, dying there on 25th March 1861. She was buried back at Leighton Buzzard six days later.

There are a couple of baptisms which may be this Mary that would fit with the age and birthplace quoted in the censuses, or neither of these may be her:
ch. 20 Feb 1782, Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire: Mary daughter of Thomas & Mary Tring
ch. 11 Feb 1787, Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire: Mary daughter of John and Sarah Tring
The 1787 baptism is considered more likely on the basis that there is a burial of a Mary Tring at Leighton Buzzard on 8th July 1782 which could well be the child baptised earlier that year. However, further evidence needed to be sure.

Needs to be confirmed at Bedfordshire Archives.
