p 46 - SAMUEL HESS, third child of Philip Hess, was born in Springfield Twp. about the year 1783. He married Elizabeth Rinker, daughter of Henry Rinker, of Flint Hill, Springfield Twp., Bucks County, Pa., and followed day-laboring. Three children were born: Solomon, Catharine and infant daughter.

Samuel married a second wife, Mrs. Maria Reiss, nee Weaver, widow of Simon Reiss. She was born near Wasser-gasse, Lower Saucon Twp., Northampton County, Pa., December 22, 1772; died January 24, 1881, having reached the extraordinary age of 108 years. She lies buried in Lower Saucon Church burying ground. Samuel Hess was addicted to strong drink, and neither of his wives continued to live with him. In his latter years he made his home with Mrs. Christina Cyphert, relict of Wilhelm Cyphert, who resided in a little log house which stood directly opposite Christ Church, at Springtown, Pa. Samuel died about the year 1852.
