Hawes, Samuel - entered service in Virginia; Lt. Colonel; Bounty Land Warrant #1066 issued 7/5/1799 to only surviving heirs: Elizabeth (Hawes) Buckner, Mary (Hawes) Buckner, Charlotte (Hawes) Buckner, Elliott Hawes, Richard Hwes & Walker Hawes; records lost in Washington D.C. fire in 1800; query letter in file states a Samuel Hawes of Caroline County, Virginia, married 1712 to Ann Spencer, another Samuel Hawes married Ann Walker who probably was born abt. 1728, also an Isaac Hawes born abt. 1713 in Caroline County, Virginia, or Essex County, Virginia, died there in 1789 & his son Isaac moved to Georgia where he died 1823 in Lincoln County; query letter in file states an Anna Haw/Hawes married John Stewart in Hanover County, Virginia. Robert Buckner; (7) Charlotte Hawes, b. 1765, m. 1st to Richard Buckner in 1782, 2d to William Buckner in 1797; (8) Aylett Hawes, b. 1768, m. 1795; (9) Richard Hawes, b. 1772, m. Clary Walker, 1792, d. 1848; (10) Walker Hawes II, named for older brother who died, was born 1776, m. 1797 and died in 1828.

    Samuel Hawes, I, was commissioned Captain 2d Virginia Regiment February 19, 1776; Major 10th Virginia Regiment, October 4, 1777; Lieutenant-Colonel, March 1, 1778; transferred to 5th Virginia Regiment, January 1, 1783, and served until November 13, 1783. There is preserved in the State Papers of Virginia his discharge or certificate of service, with a large red wax seal attached, of which the following is a copy:

    "I do certify that Sam'l Hawes was appointed an officer in the 7th Virginia Continental Regiment in the winter of 1775-'76, and continued in service till the close of the war at which time he ranked as lieutenant-Colonel.
    "Given under my hand this 27th of June 1807.

    "Th. Posey, Late Lt. Col. in the Va. line on
    Continental Establishment."

    Samuel Hawes II, or Samuel Hawes, Jr., as he is called in the records, represented Caroline county in the Virginia House of Delegates in the year 1784-5, 1785-6, 1786-7 and 1787-8.

    Both Samuel Hawes and Samuel Hawes, Jr., were members of the Caroline Committee of Safety in 1774-1775. Samuel Hawes, Jr., was Clerk of that body.
