    Samuel E. Ewing was born on 17 July 1772, in Cecil, Maryland, United States, his father, Captain Patrick Ewing, was 35 and his mother, Jane Porter, was 33. He married Mary Houston in 1799, in Russell, Virginia, United States. They were the parents of at least 8 sons and 8 daughters. He died on 27 October 1851, in Jonesville, Lee, Virginia, United States, at the age of 79, and was buried in Ewing, Lee, Virginia, United States.

  3.   It appears that Joshua and Samuel Ewing were both sons of Patrick Ewing and Jane Porter.

    Samuel Ewing first appears in the 1790 Personal Property List for the Upper District of Russell County, Virginia.

    According to E.W.R. Ewing, Joshua and Samuel were brothers:


    Joshua [Ewing], appointed as grandfather's [William Ewing's] associate, was the brother of Samuel, the county's first sheriff.
