In his obituary: Was active in Masonic circles. His wife emigrated with him to the US where they lived in Chicago for 4 years. They then moved to South Bend and lived there for 30 years. He was a charter member of the old Germania lodge and a member of St Joseph Lodge No. 45, Free and Accepted Masons, a member of the South Bend chapter, No. 29 of the Order of Eastern Star, and Woodman of the World. He was also affiliated with the Sandock lodge, a Jewish fraternal organization.
Survived by his widow, Dora, and the following sons & daughters: Mrs. Meyer Krueger (Mich City), Otto A Engel (Chicago), Mrs. Irving Garnitz, Harry Engel and Jacob Engel (all of SB), and David Engel (Bucharest, Romania)
