Son of Abraham, grandson of Mordecai, one of seven (?) children including brothers Willie and Louie and a single sister, Fruma/Freda.
Immigrated to United States ca. 1904. Left Russia to avoid service in the czar's army (per his son Morton Elkind). According to family legend, he was so poor on arrival that he closed the holes in his shoes with newspaper.
Was an apartment painter, then in real estate. Married youngest sister of Henry Nathan: Eva Kovarsky/Reve Nathan after Henry Nathan took him on in his painting business. (Henry was born Kovarsky, but took middle name as his surname when left Russia and his siblings who followed did the same). Became a naturalized citizen ca. 1916.
Sam become very successful in the 1920s; he owned a number of buildings and had a chauffeur and a personal bootlegger, according to his son, but he lost a lot in the depression. Sam died after brief respiratory illness, shortly before the discovery of penicillin which might have saved him, again according to his son.
More family legends:
o Spent his time devising practical jokes and playing poker
