------
Col. Samuel Dunavan, was native of the famous Shenandoah Valley, Va., and took part and won his title in the last British war, fighting chiefly against the Indian allies of the English government. The Col.'s farm adjoined that of Joseph Armstrong. notes from David Dunavan 1938.
------
It seems that Samuel went by a couple of different spellings of his last name. Dunnavan was used on some military papers and Dunaven was listed on his service records, when he enlisted for the War of 1812 as a Captain. One of his son's continued the Dunnavan spelling. When he died, his stone lists Dunavan and two of his son's continued that spelling.
