▼Facts and Events
Samuel George Doherty was born on 27th April 1875 at Luton in Bedfordshire, son of a straw hat sewer named Eliza Doherty, formerly Kempson, and her husband James Doherty. Eliza and James had only married just over three weeks before Samuel's birth.
When Samuel was about eighteen months old, his father James died, aged just 31. Eliza was pregnant at the time, and Samuel's sister Eliza Elizabeth was born after their father's death.
Samuel's mother Eliza remarried in 1880, when Samuel was five. Her second husband was a hat blocker named George Cook. Samuel appears in both the 1881 and 1891 censuses living with his mother, stepfather, sister and a number of half-siblings from his mother's marriage to George Cook.
Samuel has yet to be researched after 1891, when he was working as a milkman's boy.
