Eliza Elizabeth Doherty was born on 3rd January 1877 at Luton in Bedfordshire, daughter of a straw hat sewer named Eliza Doherty, formerly Kempson and her late husband James Doherty, who had died sometime in the three months or so immediately before Eliza's birth, when he was 31.
When Eliza was three years old her mother married again, with her second husband being a hat blocker named George Cook. The 1881 and 1891 censuses find Eliza living with her mother and stepfather and various half-siblings. In 1891 she was also described as Elizabeth Cook, taking her stepfather's surname.
In the 1901 census, Eliza was working as a straw hat machinist and living with her by then widowed mother at 2 Cowper Street in Luton.
Eliza has yet to be researched after 1901.
