James Doherty was born in Ireland in around 1845. He was the son of a seamstress called Eliza Doherty, formerly Davis, and her husband George Doherty, a joiner. Prior to his birth his parents had lived in England, in the town of Wigan in Lancashire, appearing there in the 1841 census and having a son John there in 1842. They appear to have returned to Ireland before James's birth, although it has yet to be established whereabouts in Ireland James was born.

By 1861 the family had returned to Wigan, although James's father had died by this time as his mother was described as a widow. James was working as an apprentice printer. The 1871 census finds James working as a compositor printer and still living in Wigan with his mother.

On 3rd April 1875 James married Eliza Kempson at Luton. A marriage notice in the local newspaper described him as a compositor of Preston, Lancashire, which may indicate that he had moved from Wigan. After their marriage, they settled in Luton.

Eliza must have been heavily pregnant when they married; she gave birth just over three weeks later to a son named Samuel George Doherty. The following year Eliza conceived again, but James did not live to see the baby. James died on 10th December 1876, but the baby, a girl called Eliza Elizabeth, was not born until 3rd January 1877. James was said to be 31 years old when he died. The local newspaper reported that he had been the secretary of the Luton branch of the Printers' Typographical Society.

Eliza remarried just over three years after James's death.
