Facts and Events
"Samuel Camfield, s. Matthew & Sarah (Treat) Camfield. bap. 19 Oct. 1645 in New Haven, d. Oct. 1690. m. Elizabeth Willoughby [Elizabeth Merwin; see NEHGR 118:295-96]. ch. Ebenezer3 (b. 14 Feb. 1670). Abigail3 (b. April 1673). Matthew3. Samuel3 (b. May 1679. d. Sept. 1712). Jedediah3 (b. Aug. 1681). He went from New Haven to Norwalk, Conn., with his father in 1652, and there is evidence that he accompanied his father to Newark, N. J. in 1666, as he was awarded a home lot on the south west corner of Market and Washington Streets, 6 chains along the former and 10 chains along the latter street. If he was in Newark, he did not remain there long, as his name appears in the early records of Norwalk, where 'Samewell Camfeld' signed an agreement 19 Feb. 1668. A deed is on record in Newark, dated 6 June 1673, from Samuel Camfield of Norwalk, Conn., to the overseers of the estate of his father, for his brothers Ebenezer and Matthew 'Canfield' of 'Neworke.' It was signed 'Samuel Canfield,' and witnessed by Thomas Luddinton and John Browne, both of whom were residents of Newark. This deed is interesting as proof that he was in Newark at that time. The fact that he was not made a Freeman of Norwalk until 14 Oct. 1669, when he was twenty-four years of age, is evidence that he had been out of the colony of Connecticut. The evidence of the earliest records at Norwalk is conclusive that he wrote his name 'Samuell Camfeld,' but as he grew older he changed it to 'Camfeild' or 'Camfield.' His descendants spell their surname Canfield."[2]
