According to his bio, Samuel served in the 72nd Indiana Infantry during the Civil War. On December 20, 1880, he married Mary Shankland, daughter of "John and Miranda (Loch) Shankland, who died February 19, 1889... leaving two children Edward, who was born Sept 15, 1881; and Ernest, November 29, 1886. Mr. Byers then led to the altar Miss Fannie Johnston, a daughter of Adam Johnston of Wilson Co., Kansas, formerly of Brown County, Ohio, and she died March 26, 1899." Samuel was 'employed in the government survey in Kansas for some time, and in 1869 located in Lewiston, Missouri. More than two years later he came to Talbot, Benton Co. In the 1900 census for the Indiana State Soldiers Home, Wabash, Tippecanoe Co., Indiana, Samuel B. Byers is 53, b. (Feb?) 1847 in Kentucky (father Maryland, mother Ohio), widowed. {ed 113, sh 4b, p.330}

In the 1910 census for Jordan, Warren Co., Indiana, Samuel B. Byers is 63, b. Indiana, (father Maryland, mother Ohio), widowed, farmer. {ed 195, sh 2a, p.168}
