Coal was first discovered in the Snow Shoe region by a hunting party, of which Samuel was one of the members. Samuel was a colorful character with many stories to go along with him. He was compared by one historian to Daniel Boone and Davy Crockett. He killed hundreds of panthers, wolves, deer, and bears -- thousands of pounds of meat.
