Salome Elizabeth Mudd was born on 26th July 1826 and baptised the following month in the parish of Bethnal Green, Middlesex, in the eastern suburbs of London. She was the daughter of a carpenter called Joseph Mudd and his wife Mary. Salome appears in the 1841 census living with her parents and siblings at William Street in Bethnal Green.
In 1850, aged about 24, Salome married a brass finisher and gas fitter called William Joseph Wentworth. He was also from London, but they married over 100 miles west of London in Herefordshire. They returned to the London area after their marriage, appearing in the 1851 census at Princes Street in Whitechapel. Salome and William do not appear to have had any children.
The 1861 census finds Salome and William living at 70 Devonshire Street in Lambeth, and by 1871 they were living at 10 Grosvenor Row in Westminster.
William died in 1876, aged 47.
On 29th March 1879, aged 52, Salome married again. Her second husband was William John Samuel Timothy, who had previously worked as a draper. They married at St Giles without Cripplegate church in the City of London. As it happens, the marriage was not valid - although William described himself as a widower, his first wife was actually still alive, albeit he was separated from her. Whether or not Salome knew this at the time is not clear, but she did later revert to describing herself as a widow and using the surname Wentworth from her first marriage, indicating that she knew her second marriage was not valid.
The 1881 census finds Salome running a coffee house at 51 Barbican in the City of London, with a lodger staying with her. William Timothy has not been found in that census. In the 1891 census Salome was still running a coffee house on Barbican, which was called The Crown. There were five lodgers staying there with her on census night, one of whom was William Timothy, who described himself as 'kept by friends' - it seems likely therefore that Salome and William continued their relationship even though they knew themselves not to be legally married.
By 1901 Salome and William had moved to 2 Wine Office Court in London.
Salome and William both died early in 1905 - their deaths were both registered in the first three months of the year: Salome in the City of London and William in the Poplar district to the east of the city. Salome was 78 years old when she died.
