As one of the oldest and best known residents of Roberts, her death is worthy of more than a passing notice. Ruth C. parish was born July 11, 1819, in Campbell Co., Kentucky. On September 1, 1842, she was united in her native town to William I. Newman and resided there until 1865 when they removed to Buckley, Iroquois Co., Illinois, and thence to Roberts. Nine children blessed the union of Mr. and Mrs. Newman, five sons and four daughters. Two of the daughters preceded the mother to the other world, leaving two daughters and five sons besides her aged partner to mourn her loss. About two weeks previous to her death the entire family was gathered in a family reunion at which were present 27 children and grandchildren and a most joyous meeting it was, but scarcely had they reached their respective homes when they were summoned to her dying bed and all arrived in time to cheer her last moments and assist in tenderly caring for her surviving husband. Mrs. Newman was universally and respected by the community and her loss is felt not only by her family but all her enjoyed her acqaintance.
