Ruth was Christened Ruth Marie. She worked as a telephone operator and may have trained and worked as a nurse. She married late in life to widower James Ghrist, and they had no children. She was always very kind to her nephew, Courtland George Smith (son of elder sister Irene) when he was in the orphanage; on her days off work she would come and take him out for a treat. She died of cancer, having four times previously beaten the disease. She was also a woman of abiding and deep religious faith.
