Amanda was born the second of six children and was christened Amanda Lovisa Mathilda Wallmark (date unknown, but in 1859) in the Chisago Lake Lutheran Church.

She was intelligent and had a good education, and worked as a school teacher in Chisago Lake.

She married Carl Ekman at her parents' St. Paul home on County Road, St. Paul, Minnesota. She and Carl had a total of 10 children, nine of whom survived; she died giving birth to the 10th, stillborn, child.
