Parentage

Ruth Cottle is likey the "baseborn" or illegitimate child of Ruth Cottle, daugher of Uriah Cottle of Greenbrier County, Virginia. Her mother, Ruth Cottle was brought into Court in Greenbrier County on March 27, 1787 for having a "baseborn child", and the charges were dropped after her marriage to David Nutter on 13 January 1789 in Greenbrier County. This Ruth would have been born too early to have been a child of one of the elder Ruth's siblings, and her mother had died in 1810, so the Ruth that married James McCoy in 1811 appears to be that baseborn child born to the elder Ruth.

It is possible, but unlikely that Ruth was fathered by David Nutter, as she was conceived at least 2-3 years before the marriage of her mother to Nutter [her mother would have been about 16 years old when she was conceived]. Additional research may be necessary.
